Sarena Paton, La Carissima, Terry Sawchuk Producer, 2009

Sarena Paton’s most recent album, La Carissima, features an impressive mix of contemporary and classical pieces. This album would be a great starting point for a listener that is new to, but curious about classical music. Paton’s selection of Puccini’s O Mio Babbino Caro and Schubert’s Ave Maria were excellent choices for this album as they are both recognizable and familiar to most listeners.

While singing, Paton is able to show off her vocal talents without making the songs too ornamented. This gives her music a modern feel that makes it suitable for a wide range of settings. One could enjoy this music while dining at a fine restaurant or when relaxing in the tub at home.

Almost anyone would enjoy La Carissima as something to create atmosphere. The music is calm, relaxing and as inoffensive as you can get. People who enjoy the music of artists like Sarah Brightman or Barbara Streisand would surely appreciate this album in a deeper way. It would not be surprising if some listeners develop a taste or even a craving for more of Paton’s classical pieces after this album.
